Yaz and Yasmin have been linked to many serious cardiovascular injuries, including strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and even death. Yaz and Yasmin are oral contraceptives prescribed for premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne. They are made from a synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a synthetic progestin (drospirenon).
At least two studies have concluded that the risk of venous thromboembolism is three times greater in women who are prescribed birth control with drospirenon, including Yaz and Yasmin, than women who are taking another form of birth control. There have been many reports of women in their 20s and 30s having strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots while taking Yaz or Yasmin, causing permanent disability.
Yaz has also ran afoul of the United States Food and Drug Administration for misleading advertisements promoting off-label benefits of the drug. Women taking Yaz for the advertised off-label benefits may have been inadvertently putting themselves at risk of dangerous heart complications.
