Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
U visas are available to victims of serious violent crimes and would be helpful to the law enforcement officials. A law enforcement official must certify that the prosecution would be harmed without the assistance to the victim. U visa holders may adjust status after three years to legal permanent status. Spouses, children or parents, and possibly siblings, of the U visa holder may be granted derivative visas.
