J-1 may permit employment for students, researchers, specialists, visiting faculty, medical, industrial trainees and au pairs. Some persons who are admitted under the J-1 Visa are subject to a two-year foreign residency requirement before they may change to certain other nonimmigrant visa categories or before they may obtain permanent residency.
