Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressants, such as Paxil® (paroxetine) and Zoloft® (sertraline), have been linked to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) and other severe birth defects that can result in physical and mental disability. According to studies, pregnant women taking SSRI antidepressants could be more than six times as likely to give birth to an infant with PPHN. Infants diagnosed with PPHN suffer from a lack of oxygen in the blood stream, called hypoxia, which can lead to permanent developmental damage.
Other reported birth defects linked to SSRI usage include heart defects such as atrial and ventricular septal defects and conotruncal defects, developmental defects such as anencephaly, craniosynostosis, and omphalocele, and physical defects such as limb reduction, anal atresia, club foot, and cleft lip.
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult with a physician if they are currently taking, considering taking, or considering discontinuation of Paxil® (paroxetine), Zoloft® (sertraline), or any selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. Other common SSRI drugs include Prozac® (fluoxetine) and Effexor® (venlafaxine).
